This is my buzz line on LinkedIn and it truly is a reality.

Contracting is a route many banks are currently taking with their hiring for various reasons including: resourcing for specific projects, bringing people on in contract to permanent capacities, providing maternity cover and/or extra resources during busy periods, establishing new teams and so on. Contracting is particularly prevalent in North America, Europe and Australia, however the market is Asia is significantly less developed.

Attitudes towards contracting are changing for both professionals and employers. It is no longer viewed as merely a stop-gap; it can be a valid career progression for professionals and a strategic and efficient investment for the employer.

1. An increasing number of professionals in permanent roles in the Singapore jobs market are considering contract positions.

• The duration of a permanent role in the banking industry given all the offshoring, restructuring and transformation projects taking place is starting to be questioned by job seekers.

2. Many professionals with traditional permanent backgrounds are now putting the same amount of consideration into contract offers.

• A contract role can be dynamic and exciting, and may add high level value to a business – providing an opportunity to boost your CV with a significant achievement and raising your profile in the professional market.

3. Contract interview processes are similar to those for permanent roles.

• There is still a lot of work to do to educate employers on the urgency of decision-making when it comes to securing the best people. Both the contract and permanent hiring markets are fast paced and top talent will get snapped up by financial institutions quickly.
