Recruitment Insight from the Professionals

TAG | general election

While the British have been busy with their Royal Wedding, the buzz on our little island is all around the upcoming General Election. Watching the campaigning reminds me of the all important interview process that every candidate should be well prepared for.

In an interview you have the first 10 minutes to grasp the attention of the interviewer and usually no more than 40 minutes to create a lasting impression. Here are some pointers to help you put your best foot forward:

1. Understand the audience
With the marvelous creation of LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com), you’ll be able to look up and learn about your interviewers/potential hiring managers.  You may even stumble on a common interest which you can chat about to build rapport.

2. Do your homework
Having a sound understanding of the company and the market it operates in is essential. Research the nature of the business, its competitors and think about how you can add value to their operations. You may even want to read some of the company’s recent press releases (if available).

3. First impressions last
As the old saying goes “first impressions last”. Ensure you are well groomed and dressed in smart business attire. Avoid excessive jewelery, cologne/perfume and make-up. These are just some small steps that will go a long way.

4. Communicate clearly
Your communication skills will be a key concern for hiring managers. Speak clearly, prepare specific examples to ‘back up’ your statements and avoid complaining about your current role or colleagues.

Always remember that the interview is your showcase; an opportunity to highlight your strengths and garner a vote from your prospective employers.
